OUR PHILOSOPHIES MEAN SOMETHING
Selva's Philosophy
Being a Social Justice student has thought me how to be an outspoken person not just for myself and my benefit but for other people. Social Justice to me was just a couple of words that didn't really mean anything. But once i was officially part of the 2015 graduating class entering in 2010 I decided I didn't want those two words to just remain in my head without a mining. I made them mean something and actually represent them in my life. Social Justice is the chance of opportunities and accomplishing many thing you believe in and want to fight for. Being a Social Justice student has made me realize how important it is to speak up for what we know is wrong and that we can do something about it. Personally I never thought that day would come, it never came to my head that one day I along with my peers would have to fight for classes and to keep our teachers. We fought the same way that parents and other people fought to have our school built. The same way that they knew a new school would be better for us and new generations. Being in Social Justice it has showed me that to be outspoken we need to step on the obstacles and brake them down. Obstacles create success and they are in everyone's life its what makes them stronger day by day. It’s what makes us stronger and makes us different from everyone else. Everyone has different obstacles and has found ways to overcome them. The way the obstacles are fought is what makes us different. There is different visions of struggles but mine is to overcome fears and do what we know is best and that we will not let anyone tell us that we can’t do it. Struggle is fighting the obstacles and finding solutions that will help us in the situation. A struggle is finding many ways to fight for what we want to accomplish. It can be through media, advertisements, or any kind of organization. The point here is to raise awareness about the issue and being able to carry and action out even if struggle and obstacles are present throughout the way. Nobody said it would be easy. Once you start carrying actions out some of the struggles will be rejection, teamwork, lack of organizations, and many others. Point is to plan it out as much as possible and then starting it out with the people who will be there to support you. My role on the struggle is to bring my idea to the table and show what I think is best and be outspoken about it because it will help others and I may be speaking for other people who have the same idea but are afraid to speak up. Being part of the struggle is a way we get to learn more and get more knowledge about what is going on not just that but we can leave a legacy and people will look back to it and see they can as well do something to carry on the legacy and make it even more meaningful to us, themselves, and to others.
Jocelyn's Philosophy
It is a privilege to graduate from a school called social justice. Social justice did not have a clear meaning at the start of my high school career. However, throughout different classes, I learned that social justice is a very powerful term. Social justice is striving for rights and not giving up. It is the starting point of somebody’s passion and therefore their determination to achieve a certain goal. Social justice addresses equality and unity For example, there are many organizations that have a purpose to address social justice issues such as immigrant rights, education rights, and even economic equality. Starting my freshman year of high school in my biology class, I learned about the struggles that people face because of one’s physical traits, such as having or not having blonde hair, colored eyes, etc. Then I realized that social justice issues are everywhere. Overwhelmingly, social justice it is not easily achieved. There are many obstacles that people need to go through to obtain social justice. People with power will take advantage of other people. Such as immigrants being looked as criminals, these negative perceptions can vary. People do not have the same rights as they should and that is when injustice is presented. Another obstacle is that media can alter and brainwash people with things that are not even true such as the perfection of body image, or even the judgment of sexual orientation. People have to struggle; people constantly need to right and stand up and even resist the harsh, ignorant comments and stereotypes to achieve social justice.People need to take a step to achieve social justice in the forms of protests, rallies, petitions, and even through the media. People need to target the issue they wish to change. As a result, those committed to social justice will be united and will reflect back to historical people that have fought for social justice, such as Martin Luther King Jr. The legacy that these people will leave will be remembered. I am proud to say that my fire has guided me to my future career. By being a sociology major I can teach young people to learn to love themselves. I will guide people to achieve a positive image about themselves, that is my passion. As I start to build up my future path, I myself want to be part of the struggle. My contribution to the struggle can help young teenagers. It can even help my peers to understand that one does not need to be perfect. One does not need to be what media calls “beautiful.” People are simply beautiful the way they are.
