REDEFINE BEUTY WITH NO SHAPE, SIZE, OR NUMBERS
Body image is a very important aspect amongst teenagers. Teenage girls put tons of make-up and do many devastating things to their body just to be the ideal beautiful girl that society sets up. Body image in society is portrayed as thin, tall, and blonde with colored eyes. The high pressure and high standards that society sets on beauty can create a much-tormented life to teenage girls. Not having a positive self-body image of oneself can really hurt people and their health. Consequently, eating disorders tend to appear because of one’s negative body image. Eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Eating disorders can really damage one’s health and in order to address this issue we both decided to break a norm that can simultaneously raise awareness.
We decided to give out the roses during school to the whole campus. During school was best because since we am focusing on teenage girls, we gave a rose to each grade level girl. The people that we encountered were mostly girls but also boys were observing me. We felt that we had the spotlight effect because Students looked at us as we passed by with the bunch of roses in my hand. Some girls in the 12th grade asked me why we had roses and we just told them “let no one define you”. The girls were all confused and said “ok.”
Most of the girl’s reactions were surprised. They did not expect me to walk up towards them and give them a rose. There was a sophomore girl from SOJO, which she got happy as we gave it to her. After we gave her the rose she told her friends, “Look, I got a rose” and that made us feel happy. In contrast, a junior girl from SOJO left her rose behind in one of the classrooms at the end of a period and I noticed that she did not really pay attention to the message attached to it. There was a junior girl from SOJO that commented at me giving out the rose to one of her friends and said,” I thought you were going to ask her to prom” and I felt that was very funny. It is very interesting at how that one girl that thought I was going to ask her friend to prom portrayed me. This tells me that girls giving out compliments and roses to another girl are rare. Thus, the reactions of the girls were similar to what we expected.
