Beauty Will Always Be Global
Eating disorders are not only common in the U.S but globally. It is very common that young adolescents will start to worry about their self-image and appearance. According to the "Eating disorder and popular culture form a global and national standpoint, the influence of the media is largely to blame for this concerning issues” (Lonergan, D., Arcarola, J., Kern, A., & Daniel, R., 2010). Meaning that now that media is expanding, starting at youth adolescents media will target them with many commercials, magazines, radio, music, movies, and videos that represent what the ideal body should be. Also, it is included that, “Approximately 70 million people world-wide struggle with eating disorders, with the highest prevalence unsurprisingly being among countries of western culture including Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and South Africa” (Lonergan, D., Arcarola, J., Kern, A., & Daniel, R., 2010). This is an issue that can potentially expand to other countries. Media is used to get the attention of certain age groups to sell products using beauty as the valuable concept. The solution to this global issue seems impossible since media is constantly around us. However, not all media depicts beauty as thin. There are media that embrace larger bodies and demonstrate that it is also beauty. For example, there is the Dove campaign for Real Beauty that portrays larger bodies, and there is also the #Iamnoangel campaign raised by Lane Byrant, where plus size women are in Lane Byrant’s Cacique collection of bras (Parks C, 2015). Also, according to the Washington Post, Madrid banned 5 thin models (Heckle H, 2006). However, Spain has not been the only country that has banned thin models, “France has become the latest country to ban excessively skinny models from working in the ultra-chic country’s fashion industry, joining Israel, Spain and Italy (Stampler L, 2015).
But not everything seems impossible; “All around the world there are physicians and medical clinics that work with people every day to help cure the negative effect of eating disorders.” addressed the article. Many options can help people worldwide with this issue. For example, in the United Kingdom there is a leading charity campaign called ‘Beat’ (beating eating disorders). According to Beat, “the charity campaigns for better service and treatment, challenges the stereotype and stigma that people with eating disorder face.” It is also worth to note that people with eating disorders often get called out and are looked down upon, so with this campaign people in the UK with eating disorders can learn on how to deal with people knowing about the issue they face. Beat is partnered up with the Dove Self Esteem project to provide self esteem workshops to young students from the age of eleven to fourteen. Working with young people is a good idea so as they orow they can prevent to be influenced among the media. Another example is the internet, this is a tricky source because it is a type of media, but it can be used efficiently. There are websites with support groups and associations that can help people.

Body image is how you see yourself when you look in the mirror or when you picture yourself in your mind. This issue is something we all confront on a everyday basis. Body image is a global issue because its something we see every day and we are not able to hide from it as much as we try to do it there is and it affects at least one person that we know. Body image is not just a whatever many of these types of situations are caused by eating disorders media. Popular media has been around for many years and it has large impacts in different life's. Media holds up a thinner and thinner body image as the ideal for woman. As time goes on the shows people see change and which then causes people to also change especially teens and if we break it down even more we can say its more likely to happen among women. as the ideal for women. In a 1996 study the amount of time an adolescent watches soaps, movies and music videos shows that they become unhappy with their body and grow desire to be thin. Watching media and then changing the way it makes people think about themselves is a big issue why? because people are hurting themselves physically not just that but they are also hurting their healthy feeding habits. People with negative body image have a greater risk of developing an eating disorder and are more likely to suffer from depression, isolation, low self-esteem, and obsessions with weight loss. Media is something we all have access to and we all live with it every day and every minute of the day. The Kaiser Foundation study by Nancy Signorielli found that in movies but also in television shows and commercials women's and girls' appearance is frequently commented on 58% of female characters in movies had comments made about their looks, as did 28% in television shows and 26% of the female models in the commercials. Men and boys' appearance is talked about less in all three media a 24% of male characters in the movies and 10% and 7% in television shows and commercials. After looking into the media that we see on a daily basis it makes is difficult to address because its something that its happening everywhere even where one least expects it to happen. Its difficult to address because in every place it will be taken in differently and the places where the action will be taken place because it will be a major change and if there is an impact everyone will need to be ready because it will happen everywhere and it will be noticeable.
